Hot yoga can refer to any yoga class done in a heated room. Though there are a few styles of hot yoga classes, Bikram yoga was the first hot yoga brought to the west and among the best known. Even though some people may use “hot” and “Bikram” interchangeably, the truth is that all Bikram yoga is hot, but not all hot yoga is Bikram.

Bikram Yoga

Bikram yoga is one style of hot yoga. Technically, Bikram is a version of Hatha, a traditional branch of yoga that combines postures and breathing. But it’s not just a style, it’s a specific experience apart from any other hot yoga styles. Bikram yoga instructors must be trained by Bikram Choudhury himself and their studios must be affiliated in order to be considered true Bikram yoga. Every class features the same 26 set poses, takes place in a 40 degree Celsius room, and is taught by a Bikram-certified instructor.  Bikram yoga could be a tough experience for a first-timer — the heat, the sweat, and the postures taught in a specific order every time makes Bikram a serious workout.

Hot Yoga

Hot yoga has various styles such as Fierce Grace, Barkan or a simple Vinyasa hot flow. During class, the room is less hot and maintained at a temperature of 32 to 38 degrees. These styles allow more freedom in the flow of postures in comparison with Bikram. We may find hot yoga classes taught with music or chanting, giving more space to the teachers for creativity. Hot yoga is a great option for many yoga practitioners who want to improve their practice, health and to build a strong foundation in a less rigid hot yoga environment.
